Hand-applied wood floor textures for Bedminster, Far Hills and Somerset Hills estates, from brushed and band sawn to pegged.
Designing floors for a Somerset Hills estate? Call Joe Avila at (908) 232-6600 or book a virtual consultation.
The estates of Bedminster, Far Hills and Peapack-Gladstone are farmhouses, manor houses and stables built for a slower pace. A perfectly smooth factory floor can feel wrong in those rooms. Our custom textures are hand-applied surface treatments that give a floor timeworn character, some using tools and methods more than 200 years old. We have worked on private estates in Bedminster, including a custom parquet box pattern in oak, maple, walnut and wenge.
How Textured Floors Are Made

A textured floor starts with random widths and traditional grades, the same way floors were laid in older houses. Texture is then added to recreate the marks of age and hand work. We offer eleven options: brushed, footworn, handscraped edge, hit or miss, timeworn, smooth, hand distressing, circle sawn, band sawn, skip sawn and hardwood pegs. Each changes how the floor looks and feels underfoot. Start with a species from our wide plank collection.
Brushed And Handscraped Edge

For brushed floors, each plank is brushed multiple times with a custom-designed, multi-layer bristle tool, leaving the denser grain raised for a gently worn look. For a handscraped edge, a small block plane eases the sharp edges of each plank, carving deeper in some places and lighter in others for a subtly undulating profile. Both are quiet textures that suit a formal living room as well as a family room.
Band Sawn, Circle Sawn And Skip Sawn

Sawn textures recreate the marks of the mill. Band sawn boards carry straight saw marks across the face, replicating wood cut in more modern sawmills, for a bold, rustic look. Circle sawn and skip sawn surfaces vary the pattern and depth of those marks. Floors can be installed with a full textured finish or sanded back to the look you want. In a converted barn or a wine cellar, a sawn texture feels true to the building.

Hand Distressing

With hand distressing, our artisans handcraft each board to bring out its individual personality, recreating the look and feel of aged wood. You can choose light, medium or heavy distressing to set the balance of warmth, authenticity and Old World charm. Light distressing suits a main house; heavy distressing can make a new guest cottage or pool house feel a century old. Pair it with an oil finish for the most natural result.
Hardwood Pegs And The Finish

Hardwood pegs add an authentic historic touch: round or square, non-structural pegs in a variety of species, installed flush for a smooth finish or slightly proud for a rustic, hand-crafted look. When no texture is wanted, the smooth option suits a clean rift and quartered white oak. Textured floors take natural oils such as Woca and Rubio Monocoat especially well, because the oil settles into the grain. See our finishing packages.
