Alpine’s estates are among the largest homes in the region, with great rooms, galleries and long halls that can carry a strong pattern. Chevron in rift and quartered white oak is one of our most requested floors there. Our Alpine chevron project from 2024 used exactly that product, and we have completed several other chevron and herringbone floors in Alpine homes.
The Product: Rift And Quartered White Oak Chevron
Our rift and quartered white oak chevron is American white oak (Quercus alba) in a Select and Better grade. It is made 3/4 inch solid, or 5/8 inch in engineered two-ply construction. Rift and quartered cuts give a straight, even grain, so the chevron’s points read crisply across a large room. It is supplied unfinished, or unfinished with custom on-site natural oil treatments on request, which lets the color be developed in the home’s own light.
Choosing Width And Length
Chevron comes in 2-1/4, 3, 4, 5 and 6 inch widths, each in several lengths: for example 20, 25 or 30 inches at 5 inches wide, and 24, 30 or 36 inches at 6 inches wide, with larger sizes on request. Scale matters in an Alpine great room. In one Alpine residence, we installed a 5 by 35 inch rift and quartered chevron; in another, a plainsawn 3/4 by 6 by 36 inch chevron. Chevron Over Radiant Heat
Many new Alpine homes have radiant heat. The 5 by 35 inch rift and quartered chevron mentioned above was installed over radiant heat and finished in pure WOCA oil. Engineered formats suit modern construction, including installation over radiant heat and concrete. The plainsawn 6 by 36 inch chevron was installed nail and glue, the method we recommend for solid wide boards where possible. Read our guide to engineered flooring over radiant heat.

Herringbone In Alpine Homes
Chevron is not the only pattern we lay in Alpine. We have sanded and refinished herringbone in Alpine homes, and installed herringbone finished in WOCA oil. Finishing With Natural Oil
Rift and quartered white oak takes natural oil evenly, which is why WOCA appears so often in our Alpine work. Oil keeps a matte, natural surface that suits large, light-filled rooms. For a paler look, our white color effects use low-VOC lyes and white oils, and stain samples are always laid on the floor before a choice. Our finishing team also maintains these floors over time.
