Designing a loft in Williamsburg or DUMBO? Call Joe Avila at (908) 232-6600 or book a virtual consultation.

The warehouses of Williamsburg and DUMBO were built from brick, timber and iron. When they become homes, new flooring can look out of place against those raw bones. Reclaimed wood fits. Our reclaimed flooring comes from carefully deconstructed barns, warehouses and historic structures across the United States, wood that has aged for decades or centuries.

Where Reclaimed Wood Comes From

Reclaimed boards are milled from timbers salvaged from barns, factories and historic buildings. Much of that wood is old growth, so it has a tight grain and a natural patina that new lumber cannot match. Saw marks, nail holes and time-softened edges are part of the character. In a Brooklyn loft with original beams, a reclaimed floor carries the same history underfoot. See more on our reclaimed wood page.

Species: Heart Pine, Chestnut, Oak, Walnut And Hickory

Our reclaimed range includes white oak, heart pine, chestnut, walnut, maple and hickory, along with blends of antique hardwoods. Heart pine brings warm amber tones; chestnut has an open, rustic grain; reclaimed oak is the most versatile. In one private residence in Westchester, we finished antique heart pine with a white lye and WOCA Extra White for a pale, aged look. Our projects show more reclaimed and antique floors.

Board Sizes And Construction

Reclaimed floors are offered as solid 3/4 inch boards, two-ply engineered in 3/4 or 5/8 inch, and three-ply balanced 3/4 inch construction. Engineered options can help over radiant heat or concrete slabs, both common in converted warehouses. Board sizes run from narrow pieces suited to chevron up to planks nearly 12 inches wide and almost 4 feet long. Profiles include tongue and groove, shiplap and square edge, with pillowed, eased or squared edges.

Textures: Wire-Brushed, Hand-Scraped And Original Face

Reclaimed floors can keep their original face, with weathering and saw marks intact, or be wire-brushed or hand-scraped for a softer, more even texture. Skip-planed boards, like the floor at the top of this page, are planed just enough to flatten them while leaving traces of the old surface. Our custom textures page shows the hit-or-miss look in detail. In a loft, a textured floor also hides everyday wear well.

Finishing Reclaimed Floors

We have an in-house finishing facility, so reclaimed floors can arrive prefinished or as unfinished boards for finishing on site. Zero-VOC finish systems are available. Natural oils from Woca Denmark and Rubio Monocoat suit reclaimed wood well, because they sink into the grain and keep the surface matte. Our sanding and finishing packages include low-VOC and zero-VOC options. Samples are always laid out before a final choice.
