Park Slope brownstones are family homes first: parlor floors for entertaining, kitchens that open to the garden and bedrooms upstairs that see daily wear. Oak handles all of it. Our British Collection offers four oak floors, Kent, Devon, Sussex and Essex, and British Collection items are always supplied prefinished in their respective finish treatments. They sit alongside our Listone range of made-to-order species.
Kent: Superior Oak

Kent is oak in a Superior selection, sourced from North America and Europe. In the straight pattern it is 20 millimeters thick in widths from 141 to 191 millimeters and random lengths from 500 to 2000 millimeters or more. It is also made in a 90 millimeter herringbone in Italian, French and Hungarian lengths. Superior is the cleanest selection, which suits a formal parlor with original plasterwork. Compare it with our herringbone collection.
Devon: Grey Stained Oak

Devon is Superior oak, grey stained with a natural oil finish. The straight pattern comes in 141, 181 and 191 millimeter widths, and the herringbone is a generous 141 millimeters wide in 400, 500 or 600 millimeter lengths. That wide herringbone reads boldly in a long brownstone hall. A soft grey suits Park Slope renovations with white kitchens and pale stone. For on-site grey tones, see our grey color effects.
Sussex: Hand-Planed Oak Natura

Sussex is hand-planed oak in a Natura selection with a natural oil finish. Straight planks run 146 to 186 millimeters wide, and the herringbone is 90 millimeters wide, with lengths according to availability. The hand-planed surface gives a gentle, uneven texture that feels old and lived-in, a good match for a brownstone with original woodwork. It also forgives the scuffs of family life. Essex: Hand-Planed Natural Oak

Essex is also hand-planed oak with a natural oil finish, in a Natural selection. Its straight planks run 141 to 186 millimeters wide, and its 90 millimeter herringbone comes in 700 millimeter Italian, 620 millimeter French and 660 millimeter Hungarian lengths. With fixed herringbone lengths, Essex is easy to plan for a full-floor pattern. Natural selection allows more character than Superior. Read about pattern lengths in our herringbone guide.
Choosing And Installing For A Brownstone

A common Park Slope plan uses herringbone on the parlor floor and plank on upper floors, all in one oak so the house reads as a whole. Kent and Devon give a cleaner look; Sussex and Essex add hand-planed texture. Solid wood is typically nailed, or nailed and glued, to a plywood subfloor, and gluing and nailing is recommended for wide planks. Our Brooklyn team also handles sanding and refinishing for existing floors.
