Parquet has always been the floor for people who want more than wood beneath their feet, and nothing shows that better than a pinwheel or a mixed-species pattern. Here is how we design these floors for New York residences, from a three-species pinwheel to the two-tone panels in our Parquet Collection.

What Makes A Pinwheel Parquet

A pinwheel parquet sets its pieces so they seem to turn around a central point, and the motif repeats across the room. It is one of the most expressive patterns in wood, and it reads best when the species change from piece to piece, so the turn is drawn in color as well as in line. Our Parquet Collection runs from classic European patterns, like Versailles, Chantilly and Monticello, to fully customized designs tailored to the architecture of a space. A pinwheel sits firmly in that second group: it is drawn for the room, the species are chosen together, and the result is a floor no one else will have. See more of our custom mixed-species floors.

Wenge, Purpleheart And Yellowheart In One Floor

One of the projects on our architects page is a custom pinwheel parquet in a private residence in Manhattan, near Central Park. The design is crafted from three hardwoods: Wenge, Purpleheart and Yellowheart. Three strongly colored woods give the pattern its depth, and the floor was finished with WOCA Natural Oil, a plant-based oil from Denmark. It is a rich composition of color and geometry, and it shows what a mixed-species floor can do in a New York apartment. See this project and others on our architects and designers page.

Two Species In One Panel: Model #2

For clients who want a two-tone parquet without starting from a blank page, our Model #2 panels pair a light wood with a dark one. Two versions are offered: Model #2 Parquet in American White Oak and African Wengé and Model #2 Parquet in European White Maple and African Wengé. The contrast between the pale wood and the dark Wengé brings out every line of the pattern. Like the rest of the collection, Model #2 is a 20 mm parquet and can be supplied unfinished, or prefinished in UV oil or natural oil. It suits a formal living room or a gallery-like entry, where the pattern can be seen from across the room.

Exotic Species In A Single-Species Pattern: Model #1

Not every rich parquet needs more than one wood. Our Model #1 pattern comes in two exotic species, and the figure of the wood carries the design. Model #1 Parquet in Palisander Santos Morado uses Machaerium scleroxylon from South America in a superior selection. It is 20 mm thick, and the tiles come in two sizes, 540 mm x 540 mm and 666 mm x 666 mm. The second option is Model #1 Parquet in Incense Cabreuva. Either one can sit beside a mixed-species border or a pinwheel field in another room, so a home can move from quiet to expressive as you walk through it.

Made To Order: Species, Construction And Scale

Each panel in our parquet collection is made to order. You choose the species, the construction, the scale and the layout. Solid wood gives old-world permanence, while engineered construction offers modern performance and is ideal for installation over radiant heat or concrete. Scale can change too. Model #3 Parquet in Oak Yorkshire and Cornwall is 20 mm thick with a 1364 x 1692 mm tile, and custom dimensions are available on request. Whether you are restoring a landmark townhouse or creating something entirely original, we work directly with architects and designers to bring their pattern into line with their vision.

Craft, Installation And Finish

A custom parquet is only as good as the hands that lay it. Joe Avila has handcrafted a parquet medallion at an NWFA class, and our bespoke flooring systems include custom-cut parquet de Versailles, chevron and herringbone. Installation depends on the wood format and site conditions: solid wood is typically nailed, or nailed and glued, to a plywood subfloor. We advise on subfloors, radiant heat and moisture before a single panel goes down. Parquet can be supplied unfinished, or prefinished in UV oil or natural oil, and for patterns that call for metal, our patterns and borders work includes a custom mixed-species parquet with metallic diamond brass inlays.
