Apartments in Battery Park City and the Financial District share a few traits: concrete slabs, big windows facing the harbor or the river, and owners who want a calm, modern floor that will not compete with the view. Maple fits that brief well. Its grain is smooth and even, so a room reads as quiet and bright. The Aurora Collection offers maple in an engineered plank made for exactly this kind of building, prefinished so there is no on-site finishing in an occupied building.
Why Maple Works Downtown

Aurora is a smooth maple in an ABCD character grade, which shows subtle color movement from board to board without heavy knots or bold grain. That restraint suits minimal kitchens, white walls and the clean lines common in downtown condos. Compared with oak, maple has a finer, tighter look, so it can make a long living room feel calmer. If you are weighing species, see our post on European maple, beech and chestnut.
Built for Concrete Slabs

Each Aurora plank is engineered, 5/8″ thick, with a 3 millimeter maple wear layer. Engineered floors can be installed over plywood or concrete subfloors, which matters in buildings poured in concrete. Gluing and nailing is good practice for wide planks where possible, and a floating installation is also an option. Over radiant heat, the floating method is recommended. Before any floor goes down, the slab’s moisture should be tested. Read more on solid versus engineered floors.

Long Boards, Fewer Joints

Aurora boards are 6-1/2″ wide in random lengths up to 73″, and most pieces run the full 73″. Long boards mean fewer end joints across a room, which keeps an open living and dining area looking clean and continuous. The collection’s random lengths run from 2 to 6 feet, so the layout still has natural variation. Boards arrive prefinished in UV urethane with aluminum oxide for everyday wear. Explore other widths in our wide plank collection.
Maple in Herringbone or Chevron

Every Aurora color can be custom cut into herringbone or chevron. Maple’s even grain gives a pattern a crisp, graphic look, a modern take on a classic layout that works well in an entry gallery or dining area. Many owners pair a patterned entry with straight planks in the living room and bedrooms. Compare patterns in our herringbone and chevron collections.
Choosing Among the Four Aurora Colors

The collection includes four colors: Giavina, Boscarello, Castara and Bravano. Waterfront light changes through the day, and a color that looks right in a showroom can read very differently next to a wall of glass. We lay boards side by side in the apartment itself, at different times of day, before a final choice. Because the floor arrives prefinished, installation moves quickly with no finishing fumes in the building.
