Pattern
Diagonal herringbone refers to a classic herringbone pattern installed at a 45-degree angle to the walls rather than parallel. It’s especially popular in formal entryways or large open rooms where the unique layout can become a focal design element.
Single herringbone is the most traditional format, where rectangular planks are laid in a simple zigzag pattern—each board laid perpendicular to the next. This creates a timeless and elegant “V” shape that adds texture and movement to the floor without overwhelming the design.
Double herringbone is a pattern where two planks are installed side by side at a right angle to another set of two planks, creating a repeating “double V” layout. Each pair must be aligned precisely to maintain uniform spacing and the staggered zigzag structure. Installation requires accurate reference lines and consistent measurements to ensure symmetry and proper engagement of each plank set.
45-degree chevron features planks cut at a 45-degree angle at each end and joined to form a continuous point in a straight line. The pattern creates a balanced, horizontal visual effect that works well in both narrow and wide rooms. Installation requires precision milling and alignment to maintain tight joints and consistent directional flow.
60-degree chevron uses planks cut at 60-degree angles, producing a sharper, more vertical zigzag pattern with steeper lines. This layout results in a more dynamic, angular look that draws the eye along the length of the room. Installation demands exact cuts and careful alignment to ensure seamless points and uniform pattern continuity.
Plank floors are made from long, linear boards installed in a straight, parallel format. Standard planks typically range from 3″ to 6″ wide, while wide planks can span 7″ to over 12″. The length of each board also varies, with longer lengths helping reduce seams and create a more continuous, clean appearance.
Wide plank floors emphasize the natural grain structure and tonal beauty of the wood, allowing for a more refined and elegant visual. The increased surface area of each board enhances the wood’s color variation and flow, especially in clean-grade or select-grade material.

Herringbone refers to standard rectangular boards, all of which are the same size. It can be installed in diagonal or single pattern. Double herringbone are two rectangular boards laid next two each other in a zig-zag pattern, rather than one.
Chevron or French Herringbone refers to boards cut on both ends at 45° or 60° angles, measured from tip to tip on the same side.
Huggins Wood Floor Specialist, parent company to New York City Wood Floors, Herringbone is supplied as pre-cut T&G unfinished hardwood pieces that can be assembled on site in different configurations.
Herringbone floors are typically installed piece-by-piece in various configurations, either parallel to the wall or diagonally (as pictured above). Herringbone often looks best with the points running in the longest direction of a room or directed at a focal point. Diagonal installation visually expands the room, but requires more material – add at least 15% extra if you are doing this type of installation.
Sometimes you need to know the size of the repeating pattern to properly layout the room and select optimal board size. The handy calculator below allows to find those dimensions. Select the size of your herringbone from the list where “W” and “L” refers to width and length of individual pieces. Other dimensions A and B will re-calculate automatically. “A” for standard herringbone, “B” – for Chevron.

At New York City Wood Floors, our custom hardwood plank flooring is precision-milled to exceed industry benchmarks set by NOFMA and the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA). Our Select Grade matches the clarity and consistency of Clear Grade per NOFMA and NWFA specifications, ensuring minimal imperfections and exceptional visual uniformity. Each board is crafted by the finest mills in the United States and Europe and undergoes both human and machine inspection for grain quality, knot control, and sap exclusion.
Every plank is back-channeled for added stability and milled with exacting tolerances—not exceeding .005” in width or profile variation. Moisture content is carefully controlled between 6.5% and 8.5%, with no single board above 9%, supporting long-term performance in a variety of climates and installations. Our wood is responsibly sourced from the northern forests of the United States and Europe, offering unmatched structural integrity and aesthetic beauty for luxury residential and commercial spaces.
Solid rift and quarter sawn white oak is one of the most reliable hardwood flooring options for use over radiant heat systems. Its unique grain structure offers superior dimensional stability, making it an excellent choice for wide plank installations—especially those over 4 inches in width—where plainsawn boards are more prone to movement. Thanks to its long-standing performance history, rift and quarter sawn oak is recommended over plainsawn cuts for radiant heat applications, providing greater stability for a modest increase in cost.
Rift and quartered oak is also the preferred cut for any installation—radiant or not—due to its minimal expansion and contraction across seasonal changes. In more intricate layouts, solid hardwood planks can be used to fill the perimeter between borders and walls when parquet is installed within, creating a refined “wooden rug” effect that enhances visual impact and craftsmanship.

Hardwood plank flooring, custom milled by Huggins Floors, exceeds NOFMA and NWFA specifications. Our Select grade is similar to Clear Grade specified by NOFMA and NWFA. Huggins Floors’ boards are produced on German-made precision molders with human and machine inspection for knots and sap.
All planks are back-channeled. Moisture content is between 6.5% and 8.5% and not more than 9% in any single board. Tolerance for dimensional deviation is not exceeding .005” in the width or profile of any single piece. Czar Floors white oak is the best quality Appalachian white oak (Quercus Alba) grown in the northern United States. Comparing to other white oak species this wood material has much more consistent color variation, tight grain, beautiful “honey” tone when finished.
Solid Quarter or Rift sawn oak is a perfect choice for radiant heat flooring, due to its long successful history of use over radiant heated floors. Radiant floor heating, using solid quartersawn oak flooring, has always been a good selection for stability, especially when installing boards wider than 4 inches. With any floors – radiant or not – Rift/Quartered sawn oak would be the best choice and superior to plainsawn for a small increase in investment.
Hardwood floor planks can be used to fill the areas between borders and walls with parquet installed inside the borders. This will create the beautiful appearance of a “wooden rug”.
Huggins Flooring can supply quality plank flooring at competitive prices. The benefit of ordering plank floor from the same source as your parquet, herringbone, medallions and borders is that you can insure that it will match in thickness and appearance to other decorative floor.
