Traditional Elegance, Precision
Craftsmanship

Herringbone wood floors have a rich tradition dating back centuries in Europe. Today, they remain one of the most sought-after patterns for high-end residential and commercial spaces. At New York City Wood Floors, we specialize in producing premium herringbone and chevron flooring with unmatched precision and quality.

A popular variation of the herringbone is Chevron flooring, also known as French Herringbone. This sophisticated pattern can be found in some of the most prestigious European chateaus and estates.

Why Precision Matters for Herringbone and Chevron Flooring

Precision milling is critical—especially for intricate patterns like herringbone and chevron. If the individual pieces are not milled to exact dimensions, maintaining a clean, consistent pattern becomes impossible.

At New York City Wood Floors, we use laser-guided, state-of-the-art equipment to achieve unmatched accuracy. Each piece is calibrated to within .005″ tolerance in width and profile, ensuring a flawless installation. Please note that wood may slightly expand or contract during shipping. Proper acclimation on-site is essential for a uniform fit.

Premium Materials: White Oak and More

Our luxury and commercial projects feature premium White Oak (Quercus Alba), responsibly sourced from the northern United States. This species offers:

  • Consistent color variation
  • Tight, elegant grain
  • A beautiful “honey” tone when finished
  • Exceptional strength and durability

Other premium species, such as American Walnut, Maple, and other Exotic woods are also available upon request.

Choosing Between Herringbone and Chevron Flooring

Herringbone Flooring

  • Boards are cut at 90° angles at both ends
  • Creates a broken, staggered zig-zag pattern
  • Width is measured across the board; length is measured along the board

Chevron Flooring (French Herringbone)

  • Boards are cut at 45° angles at both ends (custom angles available)
  • Creates a continuous V-shaped zig-zag
  • Chevron floors are supplied with equal numbers of left and right pieces
  • Maximum standard width: 5 inches

Herringbone and Chevron Installation Patterns

  • Both herringbone and chevron floors can be installed:

    • Wall-to-wall
    • With or without borders
    • Parallel to walls or diagonally for a visually expanded room

Diagonal installations require approximately 15% more material.
