At Huggins Wood Floor Specialist, we don’t just install and finish wood floors—we craft timeless foundations for extraordinary homes. One of our most recent transformations took place in a New Jersey residence, where we revitalized wide plank wood floors using Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C—a plant-based, zero-VOC finish known for its beauty, durability, and environmental safety.
As always, we combined art, science, and experience to deliver results that exceeded expectations.
Why Wide Plank Floors Deserve the Right Finish
Wide plank floors offer a bold, luxurious aesthetic that immediately elevates a space. But not all finishes are created equal. With a product as naturally beautiful as wide plank white oak, you need a finish that enhances the grain, doesn’t yellow over time, and protects the wood without forming a plastic-like layer.
That’s why we chose Rubio Monocoat—a hardwax oil that molecularly bonds to the surface of the wood in just one layer. It enhances the natural tones, protects without masking the grain, and is safe for families, pets, and the planet.
The Rubio Monocoat Process: From Raw to Refined
This New Jersey project was all about refinement. Our client wanted a matte, natural look that still offered long-term durability. Here’s how we approached it:
- Surface Prep – We started by sanding the raw wide plank floors using a proprietary method that preserves the integrity of the grain while creating the perfect canvas for finishing.
- Water Popping – To open up the pores of the wood and ensure even pigment penetration, we used a carefully controlled water pop technique.
- Color Consultation – We worked with the homeowner and designer to choose a color that would complement the home’s lighting and interior palette.
- Application of Rubio Monocoat – The oil was applied by hand and buffed in for a deep, even finish that brings out the natural texture and beauty of the wood.
- Final Curing & Buff – After curing, we returned to buff and inspect every inch of flooring to ensure the finish met our exacting standards.
The result? A floor that feels warm, luxurious, and modern—without compromising on safety or sustainability.
